Because every cardio session deserves a plot twist and a punchline

A Friday Whisper | Reflection 14

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْکُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰہِ وَبَرَکَاتُہُ

May your morning stretch out like a yoga mat in sunlight, filled with glowing health, surprising energy, and coffee that tastes like hope. May Allah bless you with wellness that sticks, joy that jiggles, and knees that behave like teenagers. Aameen Thuma Aameen!

A morning walk and cardio buddy is like a good bra, or in my case a boxer, that is supportive, comfortable, and always lifts you up.

But unlike boxers, you can’t buy a JunaidThe Authentic Buzzing Bee off the shelf.

We met during the lockdown days, when masks were in fashion and gyms were illegal. Hill Park was my jungle, my spiritual gym, my battlefield of burpees.

And my friends? They were about as sporty as a couch. The only hiking they did was from the living room to the fridge. These are people who think “marathon” means watching six episodes in a row. Their idea of walking is circling their wife’s anger without stepping on any landmines. I was the only one still free from the shackles of marital cardio, but it also meant I was the odd one out. The paratha in a keto gathering.

They had settled into a life of slow strolls and passive-aggressive weather commentary. I was looking for action, or at least someone who wouldn’t ask to stop after one round.

That’s when Junaid entered like a protein shake into a room full of chai. This man showed up like a sponsored ad for good vibes. He smiled, he greeted, and he had the kind of aura that said, “Yes I work out and yes I have opinions on which shoe brand is best for incline sprints.” We clicked immediately.
It helped that we were both single and slightly mad.

He walked like he was in a slow-motion motivational video. I jogged next to him like a man who forgot his inhaler. His steps were long and full of purpose. Mine were panicked, sweaty, and full of regret.

But I kept up. Or at least pretended to.

The best part? Junaid made fitness feel like therapy with lunges. Every walk was a podcast without the awkward ads. He pushed me without being preachy. He cheered without sarcasm. He tolerated my complaints about sore thighs, tight shirts, and society at large.

He was my gym without walls.
My dumbbell with a brain.
My morning dose of motivation, sarcasm, and subtle judgment.

Together we’ve conquered monkey bars, discussed the politics of burpees, Junaid is the type of person whose legs are in a committed relationship with speed. His one stride equals two of mine. If he’s a gazelle, I am a slightly injured raccoon dragging myself across the path of dignity. While he gracefully conquers monkey bars like a Marvel stunt double, I hang from them like leftover laundry praying for rescue.

Beyond workouts, we plan big. Very big. We’ve discussed everything from cycling in Vietnam to hiking to the Kaaba to an offbeat safari in Ethiopia.

Our imaginations burned more calories than I ever did at the gym.

These plans remained proudly airborne. Never landed. Never packed. Never even a visa. But the conversations? Top notch.

To be fair, even our travel fantasies wear athleisure and sneakers. We are that committed.

What makes Junaid special isn’t just the muscles or the motivation. It’s the consistency. The way he shows up. The way he walks beside you like the world isn’t burning and the scale isn’t lying.

He makes fitness funny. And friendship feel fit.

So today, on his birthday, I raise my imaginary protein shake to Junaid.
A man who walks faster than my thoughts.
Sweats with style.
And always has a crush on Milo and Nescafe blended in milk but never enough snacks.

May Allah bless Junaid with the strength of a mountain, the endurance of a runner with unlimited playlists, and the joy of someone who just realized their jeans still fit after Eid. May his adventures multiply, his aches vanish, and his life be filled with peace, purpose, and extra push-ups. May he always find a trail worth walking and a friend beside him.

Now go celebrate, take two desserts, and yes Junaid
Treat yourself
And please
Take your gift
And take mine too
You earned it

May Allah bless you with a morning full of light, a heart full of peace, and a life guided by His mercy. May He ease your worries, accept your prayers, and grant you strength, health, and barakah in all you do. Aameen.

Jummah Mubarak to you and your loved ones.

Wishing you a beautiful day and a blessed Jummah ahead.
